About the department

The Department of Statistics at Umeå University is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences and of the Umeå School of Business and Economics. Many students of these two bodies will typically read one or several courses in statistics. Thus, we offer over 2500 hours of undergraduate courses per academic year.

The department is, moreover, running a Statistics Program, whose students get a thorough ground in statistical modeling and data analysis. Besides their statistical education students take courses in a field of application of interest (e.g. economics, finance, computer science, geography, psychology, or epidemiology).

Graduate education is an essential component of our research activities. The research conducted at the department is varied and has for vocation to be grounded on applications in the social and medical sciences. Research projects are often conducted in collaboration with researchers from other scientific fields, both at a national and international level.

Several of the researchers at department are involved in two interdiscplinary research programmes funded by the Swedish Research Council: ”The ageing population and living conditions” (Linnaeus environment), and ”Microdata research on childhood for lifelong health and welfare” (SIMSAM network).
