The European Research Council (ERC) is a European, science-led funding body, supporting research at the highest level of excellence, operating to world class standards.
Projects are selected by international experts solely on the basis of scientific excellence. The prestigious awards support projects carried out by individual teams which are headed by principal investigators. These teams could be of national or trans-national character. No consortia are needed or desirable. The principal investigators can be of any nationality and work in any country at the time of proposal submission, but must apply in conjunction with an institution ("host institution") in an EU Member State or associated country.
Four types of ERC grants are available. These funding streams operate on a bottom-up basis across all research fields, without predetermined priorities:
• ERC Starting Independent Researcher Grants (StG)
• ERC Consolidator Grants (CoG)
• ERC Advanced Investigator Grants (AdG)
• ERC Synergy Grants
Moreover, the ERC launched a new type of call for ERC grant holders, the so-called Proof of concept.
